Compact & Reliable
The second generation of the FJ400 recycles in 0.01-0.9 sec ensuring speed and reliability while offering relevant upgrades. The FJ400 II brings improvements to its design with a 30W bi-color LED modeling light and a full-color OLED touchscreen for intuitive and uncomplicated onboard control. In addition to these upgrades, other settings are to be highlighted, including flash durations with a Freeze mode and a Creative Mask feature for better efficiency. Users will also benefit from flexible AC/DC power options with the two included interchangeable FJ Pro batteries that provide up to 550 full power flashes per charge (each). Each FJ400 II unit is a compact and rapid strobe lighting solution with little weight at 5.3 lb for great portability.
Power & Performance
The FJ400 II's 9-stop power range (1.56 - 400Ws) in 0.1 and 1.0 increments makes it readily adaptable to a variety of situations. Each flash head is backed by a 1/24,000 peak action-stopping flash duration in Freeze mode, is capable of 50 fps (camera and power dependent), and supports high-speed sync up to 1/8000 second as well as front and rear curtain sync. Users can also adjust flash exposure compensation from -3 to +3 EV. The FJ400 II was designed to suit both studio and on-location shoots.
Creative Mask Mode
In addition to basic manual and TTL flash modes, other handy settings are available, such as the Westcott Creative Mask feature, a great asset for high-volume and fast-paced shoots. This functionality gives photographers the ability to create up to six lighting combinations without moving the fixtures. Thanks to the FJ400 II's touchscreen, users can easily control when each light fires in a sequence to capture multiple dynamic looks from a single setup.
Seamless Integration
The FJ400 II is part of Westcott's 2.4 GHz FJ wireless system, meaning it can work with all FJ triggers and flashes for a cohesive lighting ecosystem. Control your setup with your FJ-X trigger for compatibility with major camera brands. The included FJ-X3 M is equipped with multi-brand technology that pairs with most camera brands, such as Canon, Nikon, FUJIFILM, Panasonic Lumix, and Olympus. The Westcott StudioLink app also offers wireless adjustments and advanced functionality directly from your smartphone.
Wireless 2.4 GHz Radio Frequency
The flash head has an integrated 31-channel, 16-group, 2.4 GHz wireless radio frequency with a range of 328'. The wireless system prevents interference with other photographers or to shoot several individual setups.
Interchangeable Batteries
Each FJ400 II runs on a powerful, removable 29.6V, 2500mAh AC/DC lithium-ion battery that will give you 550 full and thousands of low-power flashes on a 1.5-hour charge. Each included FJ Pro battery has LED status indicators to keep you appraised of remaining power. Users can also decide to purchase the separately available FJ ProMax battery with higher capacity to achieve up to 1000 flashes at full power. The FJ400 II's shared battery compatibility with the FJ800 unit eliminates the need for multiple power solutions, while a convenient AC trickle-charge functionality ensures uninterrupted performance during extended sessions.
30W Bi-Color LED Modeling Light
An upgraded 30W LED modeling light is employed with bi-color adjustability from 2700 to 6500K, which allows easy framing and composition.
Mounting & Firmware Updates
These monolights have a Bowens S front and come with a 5/8" tilting bracket to mount on the included light stands, as well as a 9mm umbrella receptacle. Also, a USB-C port is present for firmware updates.
Essential Accessories
Each FJ400 II ships with a magnetic 5.5" reflector with a gel set (CTO, 1/2-CTO, window green, and diffusion). Two inserts are also included to allow the use of the included Rapid Box Switch Octa-M and 1 x 3 Strip softboxes.

Battery defect & Westcott has poor customer service

I invested over $3,600 in the Westcott FJ400 II lighting system because of Westcott's reputation as a professional lighting company.
After approximately 15 months, one of my FJ Pro batteries suffered a complete failure. It didn't gradually lose capacity—it simply stopped charging and would no longer power any of my strobes. After troubleshooting with multiple chargers and batteries, Westcott confirmed that the battery itself had failed.
Because the battery was just outside the one-year warranty, Westcott declined to replace it. While I understand a company has to have warranty policies, I was disappointed that no meaningful goodwill accommodation was offered for a professional customer who had invested thousands of dollars in their system.
The only accommodation offered was a 10% discount on a replacement battery purchased directly through Westcott. To receive that discount, I was instructed to recycle my defective battery, obtain proof of disposal, and submit that documentation before receiving the discount code.
My disappointment isn't just with the battery failure. Batteries can fail. My disappointment is with how the situation was handled. I expected a professional company to make a greater effort to stand behind its products and longtime customers when a component experiences an unexpected failure shortly after the warranty expires.
The FJ lights themselves have performed well, but this experience has significantly reduced my confidence in both the battery system and the level of customer support I can expect in the future.

Does this have a standard sync port so I can use a different receiver like a PocketWizard?
Asked by: Heather
The Westcott FJ400 II 400Ws Touchscreen Strobe with FJ Pro AC/DC Battery (B&H# WEFJ400IITSS) has a standard 3.5mm sync port that may be connected to many brands of radio receivers such as the PocketWizard PlusX Transceiver (B&H# POPWPX). Of course, only appropriate Westcott transmitters such as the Westcott FJ-X3 M Universal Wireless Flash Trigger (B&H# WEFJX3MWFT) whose signals are received by the FJ400 II's own internal receiver will support TTL, HSS, and remote intensity adjustments.

Does the FJ 400ii have a freeze mode?
Asked by: Daniel
Yes, the monolight strobes in the Westcott FJ400 II 400Ws Touchscreen Strobe with FJ-X3 M Universal Trigger (2-Light Backpack Kit) have a Freeze Mode feature. As indicated on page 15 of the instruction manual, when you are on the [MENU 2] screen, under the [SYNC] tab will be the option to set the monolight to [Freeze Mode], which allows you to capture fast-moving subjects with an ultra-short flash duration to stop motion effectively. Do note this is only available in Manual Mode only.

Does this still offer Canon RT in addition to the Westcott Canon (so I can also include Canon speedlites in a setup)?
Asked by: Patrick
The Canon RT frequency has become overcrowded in the last few years and Canon has not been able to provide a stable frequency for communication, leading to missed shots and connection loss. Therefore, for best performance we recommend either the FJ80 II or FJ80 SE Speedlights.
